In Memoriam

Rowen Holland, LM, CPM
November 15, 1970 - July 9, 2017

Rowen knew she wanted to be a midwife since she was first introduced to homebirth in 1980.  After the homebirth of her daughter, Rowen's path progressed from certifications in massage therapy, yoga/prenatal yoga, into doula work, which flowed into an apprenticeship with a senior midwife locally and a two-month internship with Robin Lim at Bumi Sehat, Bali, Indonesia.

Education was a strong part of Rowen's life.  She Held a Bachelors Degree in Women and Sexuality from Prescott College, was a graduate of the Desert Institute of the Healing Arts in Massage Therapy, a graduate of National Midwifery Institute and a member CAM, MANA, CfM, and Birth Network of Santa Cruz County.  She was a DONA trained Birth Doula and a Birthing from Within Mentor.

Rowen was a founding member of Bay Area Birth Information (BABI) and a co-founder of the South Bay Homebirth Collective.

Our dear friend and colleague passed away on July 9th, 2017 after her 18 month battle with colon cancer.  She will be greatly missed by many and is survived by her mother, her daughter, and her beloved Blue Heeler.

Lisa Showalter, LM, CPM
April 30, 1976 - May 13, 2014

Jacque was a passionate advocate for midwifery and gentle birth since the homebirth of her first daughter in 1997.  In 2001 she began to offer holistic, independent childbirth education and, in 2007, started attending births as a doula. Jacque delved headlong into her formal midwifery education also in 2007, training with CPMs, LMs, DEMs, CNMs and MDs in homebirth and birth centers across Illinois and Wisconsin and excitedly opened her own practice, Maitri Midwifery, in 2011.  She moved to CA and was licensed here in 2012, where she helped co-found the South Bay Homebirth Collective in 2013.  Jacque was a member of BABI, CAM, MANA, WGM, WI, and CfM.

Jacque passed away from a year-long battle with breast cancer on June 25th, 2015.  She was happily married and very proud of her three girls, all born at home.

Her vivacious, sparkly, well-loved spirit and compassionate nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Lisa spent years traveling and working in various countries and found her calling for midwifery in 2002 while working for a relief and development organization in an impoverished nation.  She was a graduate of National College of Midwifery and a member of BABI, CAM, MANA, and Birth Network of Santa Cruz County.

Our dear friend and colleague passed away on May 13th, 2014 from her year-long battle with Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells,  the most common acute leukemia affecting adults.   She had just turned 38.

Lisa was filled with passion for mothers, babies, and families and the service of midwifery.  She will be greatly missed by her family, both blood and chosen.
